A new study on mice has shown the effectiveness of Stem Cell Treatment in preventing development or reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. The study showed that injecting adipose (fat) derived Adult Stem Cells (ASCs) can improve memory and learning and reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s in mice, with benefits lasting for up to four months.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and worldwide, Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death, affecting 1 in 8 people. In 2010 there were 35.6 million people worldwide suffering from the disease, with estimated total cost being $604 billion. 70% of this cost was in the US and Europe. The use of stem cell treatment could prevent progression of the disease and reverse existing damage, saving lives and money.
Researchers have previously shown that bone-marrow derived stem cells and neural stem cells can repair the memory impairments in mice but they were unable to inject these cells intravenously. The new study shows that the benefits of adipose derived stem cells are equal to the other forms but they can also be administered by injection. Additionally, the use of adult stem cells is free of the ethical issues traditionally associated with stem cell treatment, as they are taken from adult donors, often the patient themselves (known as autologous treatment).
This study shows that adipose-derived stem cells, when administered by injection, can cross the blood-brain barrier to repair damage to the brain. The cells can reduce the levels of damage-causing proteins associated with Alzheimer’s and increase levels of neurotropic factors which suppress neural (brain) cell death. The use of intravenously administered stem cells is most effective on early onset Alzheimer’s, with more progressive patients likely to see less impressive results.
The study is hailed as a breakthrough in not just stopping Alzheimer’s disease but preventing it, with something as simple as an IV injection.
At Stem Cell Mexico we are at the forefront of Stem Cell Research and treatment. We treat a range of neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Stroke patients using adipose-derived adult stem cells. We are members of the International Cellular Medicine Society and are a BioHeart Stem Cell Center of Excellence , meaning that we offer the best treatment in our field and contribute significantly to research and procedural progression in the field of Stem Cell medicine.
